Regarding classes let’s slaughter Charles Dickens, “It was the worst of class, it was the best of class.” Every student would probably agree that the “worst of class” includes: expensive books, tests, grades and homework.  The “best of class” is the reading, discussion, camaraderie with classmates, and stretching the mind to accommodate new ideas.

To get the “best of class” and celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, Reese Library is offering the book talks Augusta’s Viewpoint: Understanding the Civil War.  This has all the “best of class”: moderation by Dr. Debra Van Tuyll, Professor of Communications and Professional Writing, excellent books to discuss, curious minds discussing books and new ideas and insights.

All of this, without the “worst of class”: no tests, no grades and no homework. There’s no need to buy the expensive books either (though you can, if you wish).  Copies of all the featured books are on reserve at Reese Library, Collins-Callaway Library at Paine College, the Augusta Public Library Georgia Room and the Columbia County Library at the reference desk for the use of all participants.

Meetings will be held the 2nd Monday of September October and November and February, March and April at the Towers in Washington Hall, on the ASU campus at 7pm, all sessions are free, and all, faculty staff, students and community members, are invited.  For more information, see the flyer or call Special Collections Reese Library at 706-667-4904 or e-mail spcoll@aug.edu.
